Am I right in thinking everything is earlier this year? Almond blossom, jasmine polyanthums, the flame vines have already come and gone, the aloes and agaves; everything apart from the postal service is arriving a month or more early! I haven’t noticed any particular change in the weather patterns over the last years, albeit the climate change brigade will probably disagree. Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy to have my senses regaled by flowers and scents this early in the year. The bees are out and about, but can we say it’s now Spring time? Or is there another cold snap to hit us very soon? Fingers crossed I hope not! The beauty of gardening in Portugal and Spain, is that we are never too restricted by the weather in the jobs that need to be done, as the seasonal change is never too drastic. Rains will come, of course, but the skies clear again in just a few days. The cold bites, but never decapitates and the warmth never really hibernates. The Mediterranean region on the whole, has probably one of the best climates in which to garden in. Where else can you marvel at almond blossom, pick fresh lemons and limes, adore the birds of paradise, brush the thymes and lavenders and gaze at your hibiscus?
